Congratulations to our 2006 Nextel Cup Winner:
Jimmie Johnson is the 2006 Nextel Cup champion.

Johnson's road has been long -- but well worth wait

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- A large, burly man wearing blue jeans and a No. 48 cap waited anxiously Sunday night as Jimmie Johnson leaned against his car for his first interview after winning his first Nextel Cup title.

As the television crew moved away Johnson noticed the man, his face red and beaming with pride, and stepped toward him.

The man embraced Johnson with a powerful bear hug and patted him on the back just as he'd done a thousand times before races, just as he'd done four hours earlier before this one at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

CHECKERED FLAG.

Kevin Harvick took out the broom and made a clean sweep at Phoenix International Raceway winning the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Checker Auto Parts 500. Kevin Harvick held off a hard charge from Jimmie Johnson to sweep the Phoenix races for 2006

CHECKERED FLAG: Tony Stewart wins the Dickies 500 by holding off Jimmie Johnson.

At this point, Tony Stewart is racing only for pride and wins. On Sunday Oct 29th at Atlanta Motor Speedway, he stole the spotlight from the title contenders with a victory that clearly made him proud.

Jimmie Johnson took the lead from Bobby Labonte with 55 laps to go and held it through several restarts to win the crash-filled Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway, while 2003 champion Matt Kenseth replaced Jeff Burton atop the standings.

Kasey Kahne leads the most laps and wins the Bank of America 500, his sixth victory of the season. He swept the Charlotte races, just the eighth time that has happened at the track.

Brian Vickers celebrated in Victory Lane as boos came down from the stands.
Pushing right on through.Brian Vickers hooked teammate Jimmie Johnson on the final lap Sunday at Talladega, and the ensuing chaos gave Vickers his first Nextel Cup victory in the UAW-Ford 500 amid controversy.

Vickers stole his first Nextel Cup victory Sunday by nudging teammate Jimmie Johnson into race leader Dale Earnhardt Jr., then skirting by the two spinning cars on the last lap at Talladega Superspeedway.

Tony Stewart wins with no fuel! He coasted across the line. Casey Mears is second, also out of fuel.

Burton finds way back to Victory Lane at Dover
Takes points lead by six over Gordon with eight races to go
DOVER, Del. Jeff Burton's winless streak is over and a week of controversy is behind him. Up ahead: a run to the Nextel Cup title, with a whole lot less competition to worry about.

Burton finally led the lap that matters Sunday, finding his way back to Victory Lane at Dover International Speedway after a thrilling late battle with Matt Kenseth. The win parked Burton in the lead of NASCAR's Chase for the championship and ended his 175-race winless streak.

Lap 300 -- CHECKERED FLAG: Kevin Harvick leads the most laps, wins the Sylvania 300 and takes the points lead for the first time.

Harvick on a roll

No one had told Kevin Harvick he had already clinched a spot in the Chase when he passed Kyle Busch on the last lap Saturday to win the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond.

Sony HD 500
Sorenson is out of gas. Kahne roars past for the lead. Kasey Kahne wins the Sony HD 500 by 3.428 seconds over Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Sharpie 500
Matt Kenseth won his second consecutive Sharpie 500 on Saturday, and his second victory in as many nights at Bristol Motor Speedway. His second Nextel Cup victory in as many weeks also clinched his spot in the Chase for the Nextel Cup.

This time, Matt Kenseth made sure Jeff Gordon couldn't get close enough to spin him out. Kenseth easily outdistanced Gordon on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway to win the GFS Marketplace 400, his third victory of '06.

Kevin Harvick passed Tony Stewart with three laps to go to win the AMD at The Glen on Sunday, his fifth top-five in a row. Harvick's second win of '06 moved him to third in points and ended Stewart's two-year reign at Watkins Glen.

Pennsylvania 500
Before the Pennsylvania 500 started, most insiders said Denny Hamlin was the man to beat. No one did, as Hamlin easily completed a Pocono season sweep on Sunday -- and returned to the top 10 in the process.

Kevin Harvick led 149 laps and held off RCR teammate Clint Bowyer to win the Goody's 250 on Saturday at Martinsville Speedway,a race that featured a record 19 cautions.

USG Sheetrock 400
Jeff Gordon spun leader Matt Kenseth out of the way with four laps to go Sunday to win the USG Sheetrock 400 -- and get back in the top 10 in points.

After his win in Saturday night's Pepsi 400, Tony Stewart looks to be in the same frame of mind he was in a year ago when he flew up the standings and into his second championship. Heading into Chicagoland, where Stewart won in 2004, the defending champ is fifth in points.

Jeff Gordon cruised to his ninth career road-course victory and first win of the season Sunday in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. With the win, Gordon moved into the top 10 in the Nextel Cup standings.

With no caution flags to slow him down, Dale Jarrett sped away from the competition and scored a dominating victory in the 1999 Kmart 400 at Michigan Speedway.

While Carl Edwards took fresh tires late, Jeff Burton stayed out and the multiple grooves allowed him to hold on for the StonebridgeRacing.com 200 win Saturday. Burton started 36th, the farthest back for any Busch winner at Dover.

Kasey Kahne held off Jimmie Johnson to end Johnson's three-year reign at Lowe's Motor Speedway as Coca-Cola 600 champion. In winning Sunday night, Kahne matched Johnson with three victories this season.

Going where others feared to tread, the key to Jimmie Johnson's win was his pass of Kevin Harvick, using the outside groove.
Maybe they should call it Jimmie Johnson's Motor Speedway. With a $1 million payday from Saturday night's Nextel All-Star Challenge, Johnson has seven wins at Lowe's since 2003, including the last four Nextel Cup points races.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. held off Virginia native Denny Hamlin on the final restart Saturday night to win the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond. After his first victory since last July, he's sitting sixth in the points, a place with which he's familiar.

Jimmie Johnson blocked Tony Stewart on the final turn at 'Dega to win a scurried sprint to the Aaron's 499 finish line. Seventeen cars finished within a second of the leader.

Truex, the two-time Busch champion who is now a Nextel Cup rookie, returned to his roots Saturday to win his third consecutive race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Driving a car owned by Dale Earnhardt Inc., Truex celebrated what would have been The Intimidator's 55th birthday by giving the company yet another restrictor-plate victory. Earnhardt, who won 10 races at Talladega, was killed in a 2001 accident at Daytona.

Kasey Kahne Wins

Kasey Kahne ran away from the field late to win the Samsung/RadioShack 500 on Sunday at Texas. All three of Kahne's career wins -- two this season -- have come from the pole.

In his first career Busch Series start, rookie Kurt Busch was the top cowboy in winning the O'Reilly 300 at Texas Motor Speedway. He held off Greg Biffle in a green-white-checkered finish, as Cup guys swept the top six spots.

Stewart edges Hendrick trio for Martinsville win
For third time in a row, '05 champ dominates Virginia track

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Tony Stewart won a paint-trading duel with Jimmie Johnson and overcame Hendrick Motorsports' long domination at Martinsville Speedway.

Stewart and Johnson dueled nose-to-bumper and side-by-side for four laps Sunday, bringing the 65,000 fans to their feet. After being rebuffed three times, Stewart finally got around Johnson with 27 laps to go and held on to win the DirectTV 500.

Jimmie Johnson passed Matt Kenseth in the final turn in a green-white-checkered finish Sunday to win his second consecutive race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was the only lap Johnson led all day.

Hamlin wins Telcel-Motorola 200

Denny Hamlin held off a hard-charging Boris Said on a restart with two laps to go to win Sunday's Telcel-Motorola 200 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Denny Hamlin held off a hard-charging Boris Said on a restart with two laps to go to win Sunday's Telcel-Motorola 200 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course.

It was Hamlin's first career Busch Series victory.

Points-leader Kevin Harvick finished third to put a tighter grip on his command in the standings.

Said, who started from the pole, took second place from Kevin Harvick with 27 to go after being thrown off on pit strategy and buried in the field. But on the final restart, a tight racecar left Said with his hands full of Kevin Harvick to hold on for second place.

That left Hamlin a clear rearview mirror in winning the second annual Busch race in Mexico City.

Kyle Busch had a fast car most of the day. But when he pulled beside leader Michel Jourdain with 27 laps to go, the two touched and spun in Turn 8. It sent Jourdain into the wall and out of the race while Busch whipped around and got going again in sixth place. He finished seventh.

Said led the first 26 laps before having to pit under caution, giving the lead to Hamlin, who led the most laps (40).

Matt Kenseth held off Jimmie Johnson in a two-lap sprint after a restart to win the Auto Club 500 on Sunday at California Speedway.

Greg Biffle passed Jeff Burton near the start/finish line with nine laps remaining to win the Stater Bros. 300 on Saturday at California Speedway.

It was Biffle's third Busch Series win at the track.

Carl Edwards was the only driver among the leaders who pitted when the yellow flag flew with 16 to go for debris -- a blue glove laying on the center of the track. Up until that point, Edwards had led 49 laps after starting from the pole.

That gave the lead to Burton, who sprinted away from the field on the restart with 12 to go. But Biffle caught him and slung his No. 16 Ford around for the pass.

Edwards and his four fresh tires blew by five cars on the first lap following the restart and ended up third behind Ryan Newman. The top 11 drivers were Nextel Cup regulars.

With Chad Knaus sitting at home and his team under the microscope, Jimmie Johnson had this to say after winning the Daytona 500: This is dedicted to all the haters.

Jimmie Johnson Wins the 2006 Daytona 500
From Steve McCormick,

Feb 19 2006

Johnson survived a green-white-checkers shootout to take the
The Daytona 500 is the biggest and one of the most anticipated NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races of the year. Today the 2006 edition delivered on all of the hype with great racing and a thrilling green-white-checkers finish. Thankfully the drivers avoided "The Big One" as Jimmie Johnson brought his Hendrick Motorsports #48 car home for the big win.
Qualifying

Jeff Burton put his #31 Cingular Chevy on the pole in qualifying last week. Jeff Gordon was second quick in his #24 Dupont Chevrolet. Those two were locked in while the rest of the field was set during the Gatorade Duels on Thursday.

Elliott Sadler won the first Duel to take the inside of the second row. Kyle Busch finished second behind teammate Jeff Gordon in the second duel to earn the right to start on the outside of row two.

Drop The Green Flag

The bottom line started to move first when the green flag flew.

This allowed Jeff Burton to lead the first few laps of the Daytona 500.
After an early caution when Martin Truex Jr. brushed the wall Tony Stewart took the lead and the lead pack of drivers settled in single file to put some laps on the books. This race quickly became a waiting game as drivers waited for the final laps to make their move.

On lap 47 the two favorites to win today's race got into the wall as Jeff Gordon squeezed up into Tony Stewart sending both drivers into the wall in turn two. Neither driver hit hard enough to knock them out of the race, but both hit hard enough to bend their very sensitive front fenders.

Tony then stormed back through the field, proving that he was still going to be a factor. Jeff Gordon stayed out back, being a bit more cautious.

NASCAR sent Tony Stewart to the end of the longest line after he ran Matt Kenseth into the grass and into a crash. This came because NASCAR instituted a new rule where they can penalize a driver for anything that they deem "aggressive driving." This rule was put into effect after Tony Stewart complained about aggressive driving after the Budweiser Shootout last week. It is ironic that Tony Stewart would be one of the first drivers penalized under it.

Matt then got his own penalty under the same rule when he sideswiped Stewart coming off of pit road.

Chasing The Checkers

The final caution flew with just 4 laps to go setting up a green-white-checkers dash to the finish.

Jimmie Johnson lead them to the green over Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and Elliott Sadler. When the final green flag flew the battle for the 2006 Daytona 500 was on.

As they got ready to take the final green Mark Martin said "Ya'll get ready to build another race car because this one ain't coming back. I guarantee it." A clear picture as to how one veteran racer thought that the final sprint was going to go.

When the green flew they all stayed in line until the white flag flew. Dale Earnhardt Jr. jumped to the outside first to start the outside lane. Then Ryan Newman made a move to the outside from second place. Unfortunately Greg Biffle got caught in a wreck in turn three and the field was frozen, denying race fans the battle back to the finish line.

Note that since this race ended when the yellow flag flew NASCAR is still reviewing the videotape and the electronic scoring loops these standings are unofficial and subject to change.
